Organization Impact For the past 15 years, Mike has been a dedicated and influential member of the Center’s Board of Directors, playing a key role in advancing our mission to provide high-quality healthcare and specialty services to children and families throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. His leadership and commitment have significantly strengthened SDFHC’s ability to grow and respond to community needs. During his tenure, Mike has helped secure critical funding to expand access to medical, dental, and behavioral health services. Most recently, this support enabled SDFHC to open a second behavioral health facility in Newhall in 2024, extend service days at CalArts, and launch co-located health and dental services at Bridge to Home in 2025. In February of this year, Mike also chaired our inaugural Crab Fest fundraiser, successfully raising vital funds to sustain essential programs amid potential federal funding reductions. Since our founding in 1980, when SDFHC opened its first health center in Val Verde, the organization has grown into a network of seven locations providing more than 20,000 patient visits annually. Under Mike’s stewardship, behavioral health services have expanded substantially, with mental health visits increasing by 50 percent compared to the prior year. Guy Horanberg

VOLUNTEER IMPACT: Guy Horanberg Retired Nominated by Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society Organizations Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society: 6 years, handyman, train docent, outreach volunteer, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital: pet visitation volunteer; Santa Clarita Libraries, Read to a Dog Program: dog owner, reader Organization Impact Knowing you can give a volunteer a project and not have to hover or worry that it’s getting done is critical when you run a limited-staff non-profit organization. Guy has taken on several projects – from a wagon to a caboose – and either did the work himself or brought in other creatives to work with him to complete the project, without too much oversight from administrators. His skills are so varied that we have confidence that he knows what he’s doing. He is friendly to visitors and will go out of his way to do something to make things better for them, from getting chairs to making something work a little easier for a demonstration. He’ll stand at the door of the caboose to help school kids climb up and appreciate the restored interior, and help them get into the cab of the locomotive to ring the bell – over and over, always with a smile. We need to acknowledge his craftsmanship and appreciate his special talents. Other Contributions A willingness to serve is a basic qualifier for a volunteer in any group – but enthusiasm puts them over the top. Add to that: skill, curiosity, a flair for logic and detail, and a true love for whatever cause he is serving, and you’ve got Guy Horanberg. When you talk with Guy, you know he cares about every project he’s given. He goes above and beyond to research the right way to do something, especially when dealing with artifacts that he’s fixing. He watches You Tube videos, reads antiquated manuals, goes online to search and befriends like-minded tinkerers (he found a lawnmower mechanic to help him solve a problem with the baffles in an old organ – and got the guy to help him out on the project). He loves being with people and says “Knowing we are making a difference and brightening someone’s day is the best reward.” We definitely consider ourselves lucky to have Guy – and his wife, Pat – on the team steering the History Center toward a new beginning, opening two new museums and sharing a renewed experience for visitors. Biography Guy Horanberg is a fixer of things mechanical and practical, and one of the most appreciated people at the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society. His endless energy is inspiring: he restored a 100-year-old mail cart that had been out in the elements; took apart and reassembled the circa 1895 organ in the Ramona Chapel and brought back the glory of an old caboose. He offers a skilled helping hand to just about every project. He grew up in Lockport, New York, graduating from Michigan State University. Guy joined the U.S. Navy, learned to fly, then joined the Air Force and flew for them for 10 years. A torn ACL two weeks short of graduation from Advanced Jet Training took him from the cockpit to the hospital, where he met the love of his life and future wife, “Nurse Patty.” After leaving the military, Guy moved to California and went into corporate aviation at the Burbank Airport. In 1983, Guy and Patty settled in Santa Clarita and Guy continued piloting celebrities on charter flights. But when he and Patty adopted Eddie, a white terrier Maltese mix, he “retired.” He and Eddie volunteered with the Pet Therapy program at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, and soon became the most popular duo, visiting more patients and staff than anyone else. Guy and Eddie also joined the “Read To A Dog” program at the City of Santa Clarita’s Public Libraries, where they became an audience favorite. Guy’s lifelong interest in photography has earned him national recognition, earning a “Best of the Best” award from Aviation Weekly Magazine. His camera is never far away when he works around the History Center, and he’s recorded important events for the Historical Society. If you’re looking for a picture of an amazing volunteer, look no further than Guy Horanberg.

She tells the upcoming generation of volunteers to pace themselves, to try things before settling. “Don’t overextend yourselves, don’t get tied down with too much. She met pilot Guy Horanberg in the USAF and the two were married in November 1972. They moved to Santa Clarita in 1983 when Guy got a job at a nearby airport and Pat switched from Active to Reserve status with the USAF, working in civilian healthcare, including the ICU at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. She retired in 1997 as Assistant Chief Nurse, March AFB. She worked as a Red Cross nurse volunteer at the 1984 Olympics and the Laguna Fires. Activated for Desert Storm in 1992, she set up a 175-bed aeromedical staging facility for the wounded. In 2009, she retired from the reserves, after serving a combined 26 years with the Air Force. She returned to healthcare as VP of Operations at Facey, overseeing site management and nursing services in the SCV. She retired completely in 2013. She and Guy and their rescue pup, Riley, enjoy traveling and she is an avid golfer. She was on the golf course when she got the call from UCLA that a donor liver was a match and a life-saving transplant was only hours away. She has completely recovered and while she no longer works for money, she says the rewards are plentiful. Hers is a life of service with a giving heart, often spent working with her favorite Guy.
