ABOUT US

The purpose of the Santa Clarita Valley Man & Woman of the Year organization is to highlight the remarkable and selfless work that volunteers accomplish in the Santa Clarita Valley, making our community the excellent place to live and do business that it is. In selecting one man and one woman to represent all other volunteers, the nonprofit or nonprofits that these two people have worked for are also supported by the organization financially and with highly valued publicity to chronical the critical work being accomplished through their charitable activities. Be it a social service, a service organization, a health charity – whatever the work or cause – these nonprofits are at the heart of our wonderful community.

The SCV Man & Woman of the Year coveted award was begun in 1964 by the Chamber of Commerce, and it continues today through one activity, a wonderful gala event to announce the two new honorees. Held annually on the first Friday in May, the glittering awards night is one of the community’s most popular nonprofit events. Proceeds from the event are presented to the nonprofit organization(s) which have nominated the selected honorees.

Nominations must be made by a registered nonprofit organization. The awardees are selected from among the dozens of nominees for their lifetime of service to various community activities and for the depth of their particular volunteer work to the nonprofit which has nominated them. Some nominees receive multiple nominations, but this does not warrant special consideration by the judges. Rather, it is the overall history of volunteer service provided and the depth of support to the nominating nonprofit that dictates the award. The honorees are chosen by all former Men & Women of the Year.

Becoming a Man or Woman of the Year carries certain responsibilities and perks. The two are given a great deal of publicity, they are presented with a special license plate rim that can adorn their vehicle forever, they are given the opportunity to have a special entry in the SCV 4th of July Parade, and many more honors. Further, as is appropriate for two such active volunteers, the new honorees are charged with chairing the Man & Woman gala for the subsequent year…no easy task.

“Santa Clarita Valley Man & Woman of the Year” is a registered nonprofit organization which operates fully within the boundaries of that identity. It is operated by elected Officers and Board of Directors, and its members are all past awardees. Its Annual General Meeting is held on the day of the voting for the new awardees. Donations made to the organization are tax deductible to the extent provided by law, and its tax identification number is 26-4623510.
